Let’s go back to 2023. It was a sunny afternoon when an email popped up in my inbox. It was official: BRAZ-TESOL wanted me to be a plenary speaker at their international conference. I’ve been in ELT for 23 years now, so as you can imagine, I’d been a speaker at different events at this point. Having been on international stages, Brazil always hits different, it hits home. I was being asked to join the main stage for the biggest English language teaching association in the country, the one I’ve volunteered for many years. I knew this time had to be extra special.

That’s when I learned something that changed everything for me: My plenary wasn’t about me, it was about what I wanted to say to that audience. That message. The feeling. The connection. I’ve always spoken from the heart, but this time was different. It required another level of intention.

Lots of reading. Article, studies, theses, dissertations, the content was ready. I knew the what, but the how had never been more challenging. It’s easier to overthink when you step into a new place. That’s when I froze and started doubting myself.

Fast-forward to 2024: I was asked to close the event. Someone wise told me that the people who open and close an event carry the heart of it. More responsibility, emotions were running high. The stakes were bigger.

When I stepped on that stage, I was nervous. And ready. I had studied the how. Right there, at that stage in Goiania, in the Brazilian midwest, I became a next-level speaker.
